Regular maintenance is key to ensuring that your UTV lasts day in and day out. Checking your vehicle’s fluids before every ride is the best way to prevent a big headache in the future. Making sure your tire pressure is where it needs to be and your battery is functioning properly are also great ways to prevent an expensive repair on your UTV. There are many steps you can take to prevent costly repairs in the future and we have provided all the information in this guide.

Change the Oil

Changing the oil on your UTV is going to save you a fortune in maintenance costs, so stay on top of your oil change schedule. Most maintenance schedules call for an oil change every few months, but you’ll want to keep in mind that more frequent riding can lead to faster oil breakdown.

Check the Coolant

The coolant in your side-by-side is important to your UTV operation, but it won’t take too much oversight to keep your coolant system in good shape. Many closed coolant systems can go for several riding seasons without any changes, but it’s a good idea to at least check your levels while you’re inspecting the oil.

Swap Out Spark Plugs

Your spark plugs work hard, and they’ll wear out over time, but luckily spark plugs are affordable to replace and easy to check. Keep an extra set of spark plugs on hand while you ride, but check your existing spark plugs before each ride and swap out a fouled set for clean plugs if you find that the old ones are covered in grime.

Wiring

With all that bouncing and quick accelerating of a UTV ride, it’s important that you take a look at the wiring harnesses that keep your electrical components functioning. Wires are prone to shaking loose after a few rides, so keep your handy duct tape on hand and secure wires that go rogue before they can get ripped out of place by a hanging branch.

Tire Pressure

Tire pressure is going to make a huge difference in your side-by-side’s performance. Having your tires at the proper pressure can enhance your UTV’s traction and grip in dicey conditions, decrease wear on your wheels and suspension, and improve your overall fuel economy.

Driveline

This one should probably be left to our expert techs, but you should have your UTV in the shop at least once a year to check the driveline. Whether your side-by-side is chain or belt-driven, you should make sure to inspect the belt or chain tension once every three oil changes.
