Launching a PWC
Launching a personal watercraft or PWC can be difficult, especially for a first-time user. That’s why the experts at Honda® Yamaha® Triumph® Kawasaki® of Savannah have created this guide to help you launch your PWC without causing harm to it or you.
Ready Your Trailer
A problem-free launch starts with a problem-free trailer. Make sure that every part of your PWC’s trailer is functioning properly, including the brake and power hookups. One common problem is the trailer’s license plate hitting a bump on the ramp while launching, resulting in the plate being bent or breaking off. We recommend replacing the bolts on your license plate with heavy-duty zip ties so that it swings freely when hit.
Practice in Advance
Getting the right alignment is often the trickiest part of launching a PWC. That’s why we recommend practicing beforehand in an empty parking lot or other safe place. Use cones to approximate the launching ramp. With enough practice, launching your PWC will become that much faster and easier.
Arrive Prepared
If you’re at the dock but aren’t yet ready to launch, pull over to the side so that you don’t block others. Don your life jacket, attach the tow rope (if necessary), and make sure that your PWC is stocked with emergency supplies. Take additional preliminary steps like applying sunscreen, setting up the killswitch, and inserting the drain plug at this time.
Next, loosen the winch straps and safety chains to allow your PWC to float when you back it into the water and test the throttle. By getting as ready as you can now, you can minimize the time you’ll spend using the dock, allowing others to take their turn.
Release Your PWC Into the Water
Once you’re properly prepared, start the engine to make sure you won’t get stalled on the ramp and get in line to use the dock. When your turn comes, check that the way is clear before slowly reversing your trailer into the water. Stop at the water’s edge with the trailer somewhat submerged so that the PWC can float before parking the vehicle. Someone will then need to get out and pull the PWC out into the water. If you’re by yourself, lash the PWC to a post somewhere out of the way so that you can remove the tow vehicle from the launching area. If someone else is helping you, you can have them park the tow vehicle instead.
Pull Away From the Dock
Once your PWC hits water at least three feet deep, climb aboard and start it. Otherwise, the intake might suck up rocks and other debris, causing things to get clogged. Slowly maneuver away from the dock, giving others sufficient space at all times. Wait until you’re in open water to open up on the throttle.
